Dog power has been utilized for hunting and travel for hundreds of years, and with miles of accessible wilderness in a variety of settings and lots of snow, Tumbler Ridge is ideal for this traditional Canadian winter activity. Recreational mushers take advantage of numerous trails close to town and untouched alpine areas.
Wolverine Challenge Sled Dog Race – March
Sled dog racing is a popular winter sport in Northeastern BC, and Tumbler Ridge is no exception. Our Northern Dog Mushers Association organizes this exciting annual event on the golf course trail – our own “mini Iditarod”.
Two-dog, four-dog and six-dog teams participate, as well as two- and one-dog skijoring. Races are fast-paced, with up to 100 highly trained, eager huskies ready to do their owners proud. Cash prizes are awarded in each discipline, but the real reward is the pleasure to be had by the whole family enjoying an exhilarating sport surrounded by the wonders of nature.
Team and driver develop a close, trusting relationship because of the amount of time they spend together. To betray that trust by not meeting all of the dog’s needs runs counter to the goal of having a happy, healthy, highly motivated team. What you see at a race is the result of long hours of work and planning to ensure that the team is prepared to test its abilities against the trail and the competition.
